But here's a note for Japanese readers. First, 99.9 percent of the foreigners you see on public transportation are not going to ask you a question. Secondly, when a foreigner is on your turf, the burden is on them to speak the local language, not you. If asked, and you can manage a response in English, go ahead, but if you can't help or even communicate in English well enough, there's no shame in it.
