Spaniards in passionate debate about “sexist” grammar

Women’s rights activists have protested at the dominance of masculine nouns and pronouns. The language guides mentioned by Bosque, for instance, encourage Spanish speakers to replace masculine plurals with neutral-sounding ones. “Citizens” would thus become “citizenry,” “the unemployed” would become “people without jobs” and “trainees” would become “trainee people.”
