Scaling language barriers as an expat in Africa

Having disembarked from the Edinburgh Castle at Cape Town, it was a further three-day train journey to Durban, during which I learned that the mystifying expression, “I’ll be with you just now,” means “in a minute”, and Dames and Here were Afrikaans for Ladies and Gents.
