At National Visioning Consultation, District 15 Citizens Want Kpelle as National Language

Liberian Daily Observer woman told the Consultation, “When we are in the presence of foreigners in other countries, we can’t talk our secrets because we have to speak the English that everyone else understands. But in Ghana the Ghanaians have Twi and other languages, and we Liberians are lost when Twi is being spoken.”

Since my return to Ghana, what I have found most fascinating is the number of Ghanaian children born and raised right here in Ghana who do not speak any of the indigenous languages. When my daughter was attending the Ghana International School, I was shocked to learn that many Ghanaian parents speak only English to their children.

Promoting Indigenous African Language Films

An effective way to preserve indigenous languages and save them from total extinction is to encourage the production of indigenous language films. The 5th Festival of Indigenous African Language Films was held from 2-5 October 2011, in Akure, Nigeria. More than three hundred film makers, scriptwriters, directors, stakeholders and industry operators joined this event.
